Looks like they might have split a switch (3rd pic) and tried to ride the crossing and (like Jim said) Bumped the road.

From what I heard, they think the track buckled up and derailed part of it. This was the end of the train about to cross. There is only a switch about 200 feet down the line; no switches headed north until you get closer to Dell Rapids.
